During Mr. Wilder's time as executive director with ATRI, the Ceramics Corridor® Innovation Center program has graduated five successful firms and maintained a 95% occupancy level with a new business start-up success rate of 94%.
Biography:Frank L. ThielDr. Frank L. Thiel, IV, is the sole proprietor of Decision
Management International (DMI), offering experience-based consultation
on technology management, alliance management, international laboratories,
international technology access, and technology acquisition, working as
an integral part of the client's team. Prior to forming DMI, he
spent over 35 years in high-technology commercial and university faculty
assignments. For 28 years, he was with Corning Incorporated in
a broad spectrum of technical and management positions, including projects
conducted in close partnership with other firms. Dr. Thiel served as the founding Technical Director of Corning's first overseas optical waveguide manufacturing joint venture, with responsibility for the start-up of the company, which was a partnership with BICC plc called Optical Fibres, located in Deeside, Flintshire, Wales (now 100% owned by Corning). He later spent six years in Japan as Director of Technology in Corning Japan KK, where his responsibilities included the start-up and general management of the Shizuoka Operations Center on the southern coast near Hamamatsu. Subsequently, Dr. Thiel directed Corning's technology transfer activities, encompassing technology acquisition, interactions with universities and national laboratories, research contracts, and technical information services. As part of these activities, he personally led all negotiations leading to the establishment of the Corning Scientific Center in St. Petersburg, St. Petersburg, Russia, a wholly owned subsidiary engaged in research. During his residence in the UK, Dr. Thiel was a member of the British Standards Institute Working Group on Optical Fibres and Cables. In Japan, he served on the High Technology and R&D Committees of the American Chamber of Commerce in Japan. More recently, he has served as a member of the Industrial Research Institute's External Research Directors' Network, and as a member of the Board of Directors and Chairman of the Tenant Committee of Alfred Technology Resources, Inc., a business incubator with sites in Alfred and Painted Post, New York. He has been a volunteer expert with the International Executive Service Corps since 1998. Dr. Thiel has studied at the American Graduate School of International Management, and holds PhD (Electrophysics), MEE, and BEE degrees from the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. He is the author or co-author of more than 25 published technical articles, and has been awarded seven US and twelve foreign patents.
