A
Message From the Executive Director
Alfred
Technology Resources, Inc.
(ATRI) was founded in 1987. The
mission was to establish the
Ceramics Corridor Innovation
Centers (CCIC) program and build
two hi-tech incubator facilities
that would provide lab and office
space for research and development
to entrepreneurs and new business
start-ups located in the Southern
Tier of New York State. The
original goal was to create 1,000
jobs by the year 2000 – a
figure that was more than doubled.
Last year, in spite of the economic
recession the program showed
a net increase of 11 new jobs. The numbers, we believe are a testament to the hard
work of everyone associated with the program and confirmation that the R&D
efforts of our tenants combined with technology transfer through business incubation
methods is a viable approach for introducing new technology into the marketplace.
Since 1992, tenant and graduate firms have created over 2,579 jobs. The
cost has been just $3,877 to create each job, as has been highlighted in this
annual report; the result has been an economic reward for the region of $233,423
per job. In the process, we have proven that business incubation can indeed,
be a highly successful process, as the program 94% success rate clearly indicates.
In 2009, expansion plans include development of a new program, the NanoMaterials
Innovation Center (NMIC).The NMIC program will focus on nano-materials research
and development and technology transfer activities related to energy, semiconductor
manufacturing and biotechnology. The Center will provide valuable technical
expertise available through academia, dedicated lab space and equipment for partnered
efforts on market driven collaborations between academia and industry. The NMIC
program will provide a means to more effectively introduce new technology into
the marketplace through technology transfer activities and business incubation.
For the future, ATRI will continue to focus on marketing this talent-rich region,
which has all of the resources needed to turn concepts into economic reality.
We will continue to foster regional economic growth by the proven methods of
technology transfer and business incubation provided through the new NanoMaterials
Innovation Center and the Ceramics Corridor Innovation Centers program.
